Product Information
Fire sand buckets or fire buckets were filled with sand to put out fires, and were painted bright red. They were placed in prominent positions in rooms or corridors. They were hung on fire bucket stands or often kept next to ovens, barbecues, and in government accommodation such as army barrack blocks. In order to extinguish the fire, the sand in the bucket is dumped on the fire to starve it of the oxygen it needs to stay alight.

We found this large vintage galvanized zinc fire bucket at a brocante (flea market) in France. The red paint has worn away in several places due to age and lots of use. The handle on the bottom was used to toss the sand from the bucket by holding it on the end. The bottom handle is bent from age and use. The top handle was to carry the sand filled bucket to the fire/flames. Bucket is very heavy.   Is not water tight; some tiny small holes in the bottom and rusted interior bottom. Perfect hanging on a post or stand, filled with a potted plant or flowers! Measures 11 inches tall (excluding handle) with the base diameter 9 inches increasing to 11.5 inches at the top. Circa very early 1900s. Will be shipped within the USA only, $25.
