Rare antique French oak wooden washing box was long ago used by French women who would do their washing by the riverside. They would use this style of box/crate to kneel in on the bank of the river. The box would have been laid flat with the lip facing inwards to keep their skirt dry while leaning forward into the river to beat the clothes against the front of the box. Usually the women would put some straw in the base of the box to be softer on the knees. One photo shows the position the box would have been on the ground to use (wooden wash paddles would have been used to beat the clothes clean; not included). Today these boxes are useful for storage or display on your French farmhouse counter. Oak with a lovely aged patina. No cracks to the wood. Measures 18.5 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches. Very solid and heavy! Shipped within the USA only, $40. Note: the picture of the women and soldiers washing their clothes is dated 1944, during the war. You can see the washing boxes lined up and the soldier is in one as the woman explains how to use the paddle. A picture is worth so many words!!
